The final stretch of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship is facing a massive, unprecedented logistical overhaul. Following severe security escalations across the Middle East - specifically punctuated by reports of consecutive bombings at Riyadh airport today - the sport's governing body is rapidly moving to scrap the season-ending Qatar Grand Prix and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. While Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali previously stated a desire to finish the season in the Middle East, the unpredictable geopolitical climate has forced the commercial rights holders to activate a drastic European contingency plan.
Instead of wrapping up the 2026 campaign at the Yas Marina Circuit, Formula 1 is preparing to crown its world champion at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari.

Imola has been kept on standby for months as a fail-safe option, with preparatory infrastructure work - including the construction of temporary grandstands - already quietly under way behind the scenes. If the Middle Eastern leg is officially cancelled, Imola is slated to host the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix on 6 December, taking the date originally reserved for the Abu Dhabi season finale.
If Formula 1 executes this calendar change, the impact on the 2026 world drivers' championship is huge. Under the original schedule, six grands prix remained after Singapore, leaving a maximum of 150 points on the table. However, replacing both Qatar Grand Prix and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with a single-race weekend at Imola drops the total remaining points pool to just 125. This change could potentially bring the championship clinch date forward, as Kimi Antonelli would need just 127 additional points if both Middle Eastern races are dropped, potentially wrapping it up at the Mexico City Grand Prix on November 1.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli
All will be revealed on the front over the next month, but one less race would, at this stage, provide a major boost for Kimi Antonelli out front, and a blow to those chasing him. Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver Kimi Antonelli, who does not turn 20 until next week, exceeded all expectations to establish a 50-point lead at the top of the standings going into the summer break after the first 11 rounds.
As Kimi Antonelli potentially gets closer to the finish line, the pressure on the Italian will ramp up. It also remains to be seen whether Lewis Hamilton, whose last title came in 2020, could feel a similarly extreme level of pressure as he seeks a record eighth championship.
Kimi Antonelli is 1st in the drivers' standings with 340 points.
