Mercedes Formula 1 driver George Russell has explained his comments suggesting the FIA should ensure cooling vests are widely used in hot races and exempt their development from the cost cap. Driver comfort has been a key talking point since the Qatar Grand Prix in 2023, prompting the governing body and teams to research and introduce a water-circulating cooling vest for extreme conditions.

George Russell, who suffered severe dehydration during the Singapore Grand Prix, believes that developing the vests should sit outside the strict financial limits. He stated that everyone should wear the vest when it works so well, urging the FIA to step in. However, other drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen remain opposed to making the system mandatory, arguing it should come down to personal preference due to discomfort from the tubes and belts.
While Mercedes faces tough choices under the budget cap regarding car upgrades, cockpit temperatures reaching 60C make the cooling system a vital performance and physical aid in high humidity, even if opinions within the grid remain divided.
